I don’t know if this concept is doable. :-) The measurements of the chair are exactly the same of the LC2 Petit Comfort by Le Corbusier.

sure it’s doable, I am sure there are ways to realize this. I think it looks really cool and it must be pretty amazing to sit in! great job

we need to create that and fast!

This is a good concept but the pins would have to be weighed exactly for the person

    Looks fun :)
It reminds me of the Love Mattress by Mehdi Mojtabvi.

Thats’s a great idea, but is it comfortable? Also, wouldn’t fatter people push the rods all the way to the ground?

Wow its like those pin things we used to put our body parts in when we were kids. This is cool

this looks pretty cool, not very comfortable but still cool

It’s a brilliant concept, but I don’t think it’ll be comfortable. The sitting angle is 90 degrees, which is pretty cramped. Besides, in order to keep your arms up, but not your torso, the springs (or whatever you want to use), should be quite powerful. This is not very comfortable for certain parts of your body’s “sitting surface”. Also, the strong springs don’t make it any easier. I’m sure there are solutions for that. ( I now see that the arms and the back of the chair probably don’t even have springs in them to keep them up. That may be a solution, but you can’t use the chair from any angle anymore, and you never know which angle you could use.)

that is frickin awesome….reminds me of those toys that do the same thing

Ever see that tool with the same concept as a gripper? It has spring loaded pins that will envelop any bolt or nut and then you can twist it like a screw driver. Well if you had very many pins, with a plastic pad or something, it would work alright. One inch pins should support a height/weight proportionate person. The spring issue could be solved by a hydraulic system. Problem with that is, someone violates the weight limit and you need new carpets.

Dont use springs, if you are going to make that chair. Use Gas dampers, with a 20-25KG lift instead.

  13. Jon Jon Says:

The only real problem I see is with the Arms and possibly the back. If weight is put on them the would go down like the rest and make it uncomfortable. Possibly.

  14. tim tim Says:

well not really.. could just have the pins where the person would sit go-down-able, and you could have the blocks made in a curved way.. they wouldn’t *have* to be cubes? - or if they did, make the ones that should be meldable more soft / meldable :)

    that sounds more workable?

It’s a very cool concept. Reminds me of laying on a bed of nails though.

    I have an idea.
If we all stop spending so much time ‘designing’ useless items, maybe we could spend that time doing something productive. Anything really, volunteer, put in extra hours at work, masturbate to online porn.
It reminds me of an ‘idea’ where someone ‘designed’ a set of Legos where if you did not have the right color, you put the piece on a (magical) device that would change the color of the lego.
Seriously people, coming up with something that looks pretty, but is unrealistic, or even impossible, is not design, it is lazyness.

    @ Brother Z,
You obviously understand nothing about the design process, either form or function. There is nothing in this design that is impossible. This is actually one of the best submitted designs for furniture on this site. My credentials: I operate a modern design furniture store online. Your credentials: a hairy palm.

  18. Brother Z Brother Z Says:

    @Mike H
I did not say this particular object was impossible (though it is quite unrealistic), nor did I put forth any insult.
In retort, you put forth your ‘credentials’ and insult me.
We live in a time where the global economy is fading, and the world is ready to turn on itself. Designing a chair that ‘looks neat’ serves no practical purpose. There is a reason stores like Sharper Image are going out of business. They sell items that should have never existed in the first place.
How much of your time is spent designing ‘innovative’ furniture? How much money is spent on building these things? What if that money and time were spent on researching innovative hospital beds, or innovative water delivery systems.
I am not saying that all design is useless, but design for the sake of design serves no purpose other than to show other people how original you are.

  19. Mike H Mike H Says:

    @ Brother Z,
I apologize for making fun of your palms, I apologize for insulting you.

Bauhaus. This school of design was formulated after the economy in Europe had collapsed, after a world war in which the world had turned on itself. This school has had a fundamental influence on all aspects of modern design from typography to architecture. Its specialty: Radical, experimental design brought on by a new liberalism in Germany.

There is a purpose for experimentation in the design process. It is integral to the design process.

I’ve ripped on designs here myself. I’m no saint.

Okay… the chair could sit lower to the ground, allowing easy mounting. the seat area looks to be composed of separate columns but is connected as a single component, likewise the arms/back. Sitting on the central seat forces hyraulic fluid into the arms/back, raising it.
