the coffee spoon is a utensil that is both common and precious. connected with rituals of coffee or tea drinking, this little spoon fits a highly specific niche. in this project, i wanted to take a “found space” – the negative space defined by an everyday object like the coffee spoon, and invert it into positive form.
to make the “space” of the spoon into positive form, i used clay. after the intensive process of mould-making and slip casting for the found space tiles, this project was a kind of challenge to see how simple and rudimentary i could make the process of working with clay and moulds. the spoons were used as press-moulds. a ball of plastic clay was sandwiched between the spoons, and squeezed until the rims of the spoons met. the result, the inverted “found” spoon-spaces, were almond-like objects, which i made into beads.
