Spinning Disc

Why is the spinning disc, the most dynamic element of a CD player, hidden from a listener?’s view? The simple, but energetic function of a CD player can and should be visually acknowledged. This CD player elevates the spinning motion of the disc and its linear potential for movement to an iconic and understandable form. The player embodies ?“something we know but rarely notice,?” and ?“something we understand but cannot define.?”
The spinning CD, displayed as a table saw blade slicing through a rich piece of walnut, draws our attention to an element of elegant activity within a simple, tranquil object. Appropriately, the perforated walnut speakers are equal to the size of planks that might be cut by the spinning blade. As in a lumberyard, they find their resting place, leaning motionless against a vertical surface. Battery powered and wireless, the system is clean, unencumbered and unfettered. To further emphasize simplicity and integrity, the player?’s controls have been reduced to three white buttons. Intuitively aligned with the CD itself, the center button acts to play and pause, the left button tracks backward and the right tracks forward.
Movement, scale and functionality expressed in a simple, knowing form.

….I’ve seen similar things in the past….
but what I like is the wood look and feel ;)

perfect example of a common action transefered in order to simply tell a story

Perfect if you don’t plan to have children.

Or have children visit the house.

Love the design, but I would worry about dust and other such problems getting into the CD slot

  8. Grubb Grubb Says:

A fun idea. But I would worry about the internal parts, especially the lens, getting too dusty. Plus, if somebody threw a baseball or something and accidenlty hit the CD, it would shatter.

  9. Goran Goran Says:

    Stone Temple Pilots babe! :)

  10. Benjamin Benjamin Says:

Sure beats any B&O system I’ve seen. Love it!

I TRULY hate these great ideas. Cool gadgets that either don’t exist or do exist but the Fuck who posts them doesn’t give a bleeping #$%#$%#%#%#%$% website address. POST IT DAMNIT!

  12. ted ullrich ted ullrich Says:

    great design!

I don’t think dust would be a problem… it accumulates within normal CD/DVD players, even with their palstic or metal housings.

Sometimes we have to set down the baseball when in the house, so that everything we own does not have to be made of bullet proof plastic.

I’m wondering what the power consumption is, considering it is supposed to be battery powered. It might be funny to have a wired version with an orange shop cord. Also, how to load/unload the disc?

  13. atg atg Says:

yeah, but does it have an iPod dock? and can I get it in steel/black?

  14. truss truss Says:

    nice design. great idea…
too bad this comes up while CD’s are being phased out

  15. Jez Jez Says:

Great idea, visually appealing, functional dud.
Dust is the main reason an optical disc is kept out of sight.
The system is a (realtively poor) seal, but a seal nonetheless.
A simple transparent cover would be a good idea.
Might take a little away from the visual appeal, but would at least ensure the idea doesn’t get relegated to “the great idea, but…” pile.

Thanks for all the discussions - let me first say that this posting of an idea, in my case, was an experiment to see how posting intellectual property could become a viral entity. I have been happily surprised. Within 72 hours of posting this concept, Spinning Disc has been featured on over 14 blogs worldwide and has shed light on the way that the “coolness” blogs deal with new and sometimes innovative concepts. It is my end goal to begin to introduce these marketing concepts to our clients @ IDEO and enlighten them to the vast array of possibilities the blog environment makes available to them at various times during a creative process. If you would like to discuss this further please contact me @ jgraceffa@ideo.com. Please only send emails that are on the discussion points above. Thanks for your attention and hopefully we can “meet” again soon.

  18. Michael Michael Says:

It might also be neat if the CD moved along the slot as it played through the album. That really wouldn’t be a difficult mechanism. It would mean that the buttons are not always centered on the CD, but I think it would be a wonderful visual touch, and really quite useful as there is no display to show the disc’s progress. I no longer use a CD player outside of my computer, but I think I might buy this anyway.

Flashy, but makes your CD’s more susceptible to damage. No Thanks.

  27. tvslog tvslog Says:

in the mid-nineties, i saw the most beautifully designed tape player i had ever ever seen. simple, elegant, and made a display of the action of flipping the tape to the other side. this at a time when cds had already established their dominance and the tape section of most music stores were dying a quick death.

  28. Z Z Says:

Very awesome looking design. The description however is WAY to pompous.

  29. Anton Parker Anton Parker Says:

I love the design and where you are coming from with this . I really like your use of timber and I have always appreciated its use over the years in more vintage style audio equipment.

However I think 99.7% of general socity wouldn’t agree.
They want it chrome or gold or brushed aluminium for under $200 bucks.

If this style of product was to be feasible it would need to bloody good sounding to appeal to fussy audiophiles. and also have the exclusive cache value. But even then I think the would get ribbed by their guests if the CD was spinning freely outside the player sucking in dust.

Everyone seems to like to rag other peoples products.

This is one of the best designs I have seen for a long while. But the audio quality really needs to back this up with this type of product

Forget the kids and baseballs (mentioned) at this stage, as this style of product is more in line with exposed valve high end amps etc. ie not consumer $20 dollar items from Walmart

    Put me down for one.

    Cheers,

    Anton

  38. Audio Mix Master Krunkmen Audio Mix Master Krunkmen Says:

This player will suffer from what every other litlle bitch player does. It’s a little bitch player! Unfortunaely rich bass requires a ton of ported air at the best, and ridiculous small woofer with wave port architecture at the least. Buy some nice cheap towers and leave these for the idiot*s that have so much money they’d rather have a toy than a capable sound system.

  39. Audio Mix Master Krunkmen Audio Mix Master Krunkmen Says:

Oh and fuck the impracticality of the design. It is almost as if he is trying to funnel dust on to the laser. Protect your laser, or you will have an even bigger piece of shit*. Man I love my bubinga wood 4-Way 5′ tall 2000w powered 15″ woofer towers!
