Shika Desktop Bookshelf

The design grew from my desire to make a rustic desktop bookshelf from natural materials, informed by modern patterns of use. The backbone is carved from a single branch, the shelf made from four different woods laminated together.

    interesting approach…
but, is there any reason why you used four different woods laminated together to make the shelf?
…I also think that it would be a bit difficult to taka a book form this bookshelf if it is not the one on the top…

    hey mambobot,

Thanks for your comment! The laminated wood makes the shelf stronger by crossing the grain direction of each type of wood. It also looks just how I want- please find more pictures at http://www.joeyroth.com/shika-desktop-bookshelf/

You’re right about the stacked books - you’ll have to remove the top books to get to the bottom. This shelf is more for display, or for holding a book open as you type.

Wow. I like it. Would be very handy for me. I need a bookcase badly.

For the student’s dwelling! Students are always having a different stack of books on their desk and by elevating them, greatly reduces the clutter feeling. Beautiful too.
