Mixed Mode Reality

Essentially a full color Touchscreen device (about the size of a PDA) that has a dedicated GPS and WiFi. The idea is that GPS coordinates would be seen like a website address (x,y,z). A WiFi enabled device, this display would see GPS locations (GPS tagged hotzones) and when you press the single button on the device, it would display information about the current location (or multiple notes if there are any from different users who may have left them)
Useful for any type of real life location - such as a restaurant which tags the GPS zone outside of the building with their menu and specials. Museums which could do a full media walkthrough, and even a temporary “virtual post it” where a user could leave a temporary note at a location.
More function than design, so such an idea would benefit from a design team to make it look good.
Persons who wish to make hotzones would register a web address with a service website for a nominal fee (subscription) and then be able to map the zone with their account using their own reveal unit.

I apologize for the lack of graphic. I’m an idea kind of guy and not really a good conceptual artist… but I do believe this idea is sound.

I like the idea, there are so many things I can think of to use this for. The only problem I see is the WIFI. The GPS will work anywhere but what if you’re in an area without WIFI? Maybe it could be used in conjuction with your digital PCS phone service so that you’re connected wherever you get a signal. and as far as information on certain locations, maybe it could use an existing free service like Google Earth or Worldwind to gather info at a certain spot, or maybe setup a website specifically for this device that will access the free data bases but can can also have users add info. Man, I’m sure I could think of lots of uses for this.

    interesting idea,
I understand that you are talking about “ubiquitous computing”
…this could be done with RFID or Semacode I guess

The reason I envisioned using Wi-Fi or something similar serves a dual purpose. The first an most obvious is for the wireless internet connection, while second and less obvious reason is to expand wi-fi availability through the incorporation of a useful application.

Places that participate in the Reveal system would find it in their best interest to set up a Wi-Fi hotspot for their location in order to quickly allow the usage by persons who possess the Reveal unit. So while offering a new and innovative service, you are also creating a best interest scenario for businesses to have a hotspot while thus accelerating the deployment of wireless internet.

Hope that gives a bit of insight for my reasoning to use wi-fi :)
