cutting scale

36,131 Views * 2 views today

This concept is a cutting board that has an integrated scale within a defined area on it’s surface. This allows a person to both cut and measure ingredients on the same surface with very little extra effort. Simply put, it precisely reduces the steps of preparation, dishes to clean, and time wasted. There has been a tranformative trend in cooking based around the science of food. Central to this is the idea that precise measument leads to more possibilities for new flavors. Recipies will become more demanding, requiring simple ways to be precise in the kitchen. Technology feasibility: (estimated timeline for research and devleopment) Now: Manufacturing methods to embed the following electronics into cutting board material. 1-3 years: Strain guage sensor grid technology that enables precise measurements to be embedded in a substrate. 1-3 years: Low-voltage PV (Photovoltaics) that would provide suffecient power. 1-5 years: “Electronic ink” display technology that does not use light and can be embedded into substrates.

Seems like a great idea if it could be achieved. Even if there was no limited weighting area, but just an overall weight estimate (like cutting food directly on a scale), that would be great too.

  2. deko deko Says:

one fo the good things of this idea is that you can easyly mesure what you are cutting…
so, if it gave the overall weight (cutted and uncutted), then it would be not so useful..

It’s a nice idea, but I after a period of use I throw my cutting boards away. Seems like a waste.
By the way, I don’t like the “reduces the steps of preparation… and time wasted” argument.
    Good cooking takes time ;-)

interesting idea…but can a scale withstand the abuse related to cutting food ?

otherwise, to have a similar effect:

    use a normal scale,
tare your cutting board, which means the scale will automatically substract the weignt of the board…
so you know how much weight what’s on the board…

Boon to dieters everywhere, that would be great.

Great for portioning marijuana or cocaine… Oops!

Wouldn’t only a scale be insufficient anyway? A lot of cooking items are measured in volume, not always weight and a cup of peppers is not necessarily equal in weight to a cup or chicken (or some other denser substance) A pound is a pound no matter what you’re making it of, but volume will vary.

    Great idea…but,
The area covered 35g of lettuce is the same as the area covered by 35g of flour?

  9. David David Says:

It would need to have a solar-powered rechargeable battery, so it could be completely sealed off and therefore be more durable and washable.

    i realy liked this project.
it would be great to learn how mutch food i am using
    to balance.
maybe if you put the scale in the corner, so wille you use de board to put the food in the pan, you will mesure.
so you have a bigger space to cut.
and the board could be self healing. so you can make this produc leaves longer.
it would be great to capture new concepts,a cuting boar for life

it would reduce the trash, by living longer.

    great
    take care

Thats cool, only problem, it may measure the knife when you cut and if you chop real fast it could keep changing and break it…

  12. steve steve Says:

how about… u put a flat surface on ur scales and tare it to zero
    O.o
    chop chop chop
    nom nom nom

right…. had enough of your lots silly design concepts… its obvious you ‘designers’ havent got a clue about real life. anyone could design a concept to look cool, but form has to have functionality, and that means be able to work in the real world. So stop dreaming up ideas that have no chance if working, pull you head out of your arse, and get back to the real world, and design something useful……

  14. sinner sinner Says:

oh…. and what is this time scale of items being invented crap, you pulled them out of your arse too. Estimated time for R&D, your time scales are arbitrary, probably conjured up out of air to give ‘weight’ to your silly idea, and lack of any ideas that actually work. Also you said “Low-voltage PV (Photovoltaics) that would provide sufficient power” low voltage photovoltaic s already exist, they are the only ones in existance…. you idiot*..!!!!

oh, and im a cock end.

    Great idea

i think this is a brilliant idea!!! so often ive been like how the hell am i supposed to know when ive cut up 35g of whatever… and now i can just push it into the circle and it would tell me =) i love it
obviously its not ideal for every single situation but i would find it really very useful
