iynque: "Improving" chess, if it's even possible, would be rather difficult. This is not it.
Chess is more about thought and calculation, and this just makes it more physical. You sort of attack the very foundation of the game by warping the field in this way.
It is visually interesting, and a neat art object, but this isn't really chess anymore.
I think I sound like some kind of chess purist, but that's not my intent. I'm speaking simply from a design perspective: You can't accomplish "chess" ...

I like the idea.
I don’t think I could get beyond the idea of cutting on a book, but it’s a cool design.
