Bumpbrella

The concept for the Bumpbrella is driven completely from the users needs and perspectives. Having all been in situations where umbrellas are everywhere and people are running into one another, we thought there has to be a better way. And, what if you could run into another umbrella without anyone getting poked, just bumped?
The Bumpbrella is an inflatable umbrella that utilizes a bicycle pump mechanism in the center for the arm. By pumping, it inflates into an umbrella that one can see through, thereby protecting you against the elements and from getting poked by another umbrella. By turning the handle backwards, it would deflate the umbrella. The markings on the umbrella are illumined by three super-bright LEDs, which creates a very unique look.

Pumping seems like a lot of work compared to just pressing a release button, and more so if you’re in a hurry. Also, would it be compatible with current umbrellas? What would happen if a conventional umbrella poked through this one?

    pffffff….
this is what would happen! :D

What about wind? Would it fly away in big gusts? Would the connection between the umbrella arm and umbrella itself be able to withstand the wind?

I assume this is made of a plastic material (similar to an inner-tube you would use in a pool).

LOVE IT! I love gadgets and I love this one. I agree that it’d be a bit too much work to hand inflate this thing. There you are with the rain storming down and you can’t get the umbrella inflated fast enough and your hands are full, etc. Instead it should have some kind of air cartridge you can recharge at home, perhaps a couple spares, and a recharge compressor at home to charge the cartridge?
That’s where this idea breaks down really. As to the transparency, the LEDs, and the whole hollow bouncy umbrella, neat, I’d buy one. Solve the quick and easy inflation problem though, and then it has to be cheap enough. It isn’t a luxury looking unit and it does look easily damaged by pokes.

Hm. Whipping out yer bicycle pump every time you need an umbrella seems like a lot of trouble, and so does squeezing something so much…when you can just shove up the little thing on a regular umbrella and go on. But it IS really adorable looking. ^^ I’d buy it for that simply.
